Darryl O’Young began karting at the age of 8 with a dream of one day becoming a professional race driver. 24 years later, Darryl has gone far beyond his wildest imagination and has since become a multiple champion in Asia and established himself as Asia’s top touring car & GT race driver.
For many, this would have had been a good place to settle, but Darryl decided to push his boundaries and become the first Chinese driver to compete in the FIA World Touring Car Championshp, FIA GT Championship, and also the highly competitive European Porsche Supercup. He has tested his skills against some of the World’s top race drivers with a goal of one day becoming a World Champion himself and bringing along with him the pride of China and Hong Kong.
In 2010, Darryl began competing in events for top car manufacturer Audi. This co-operation has proven a successful one, which has seen him drive the Audi R8 LMS to the overall podium three times out of five long distance races. The first time being a 2nd place finish at the 12 hours of Sepang in 2010, followed by two overall victories at the famous Australian race, the 12 hours of Bathurst in 2011 and 2012. Darryl also tested himself against the elite by getting in the driver seat of the Audi A4 DTM on the streets of Shanghai at the China round of the 2010 DTM Championship.
Darryl has made an immediate impression on the World Touring Car Championship since joining the series in 2010. Competing with Bamboo Engineering in the Chevrolet Lacetti, he took 3 independent victories on his way to a 4th place finish in the independent trophy whilst claiming his first WTCC pole position from the reverse grid. In 2011, he stepped up to a Chevrolet Cruze and stormed to his best race finish of 4th overall in Zolder. He bettered that result at his home race in the Macau GP by claiming 4th place overall in qualifying and fighting amongst the strongest competitors in the series.
Off the track, Darryl has established himself as a brand ambassador having partnered with many major corporations, charities and brands. His media figures have been stunning and unprecedented for motorsport in China and Hong Kong, having an annual PR value of over $1million USD in 2011, which has included countless features in television and print media. This also includes being a columnist in several magazine’s and daily newspapers including Autocar China, Carplus Magazine, Apple Daily, and Sing Tao Newspaper, and a co-host on popular automobile television show, NOW Sport 1’s “point of wheel”.
Darryl’s vision to assist development of the automobile industries and motorsport in China is driven by the fact that he wants Chinese drivers to be given exposure to the sport in which he loves so much. His sincerity, dedication, and genuinely warm smile has won the hearts of thousands across China, and together with the right partners in the future, the sky is truly the limit.
For 2012, Darryl will compete in the World Touring Car Championship with Special Tuning Racing in a SEAT Leon 1.6 Turbo. This is a major turning point in his career and he hopes to capitalize on this opportunity with an Independent Trophy World Title for all his fans in China and Hong Kong.
